Kampala — Uganda’s export earnings rose 10.2% year-on-year to $1.40 billion in July, up from $1.27 billion a year earlier, supported by stronger shipments of gold, cocoa, flowers, maize and other commodities, according to a Finance Ministry report seen by Reuters

Gold remained the dominant contributor. Uganda’s gold export earnings climbed 35% to $788.45 million, driven by higher export volumes and increased international gold prices.

The Finance Ministry attributed the rise in gold receipts partly to stronger demand for the precious metal as a safe-haven asset amid heightened global geopolitical tensions.

Uganda is a regional gold-processing hub, while gold and coffee remain among the country’s key sources of foreign exchange.

The stronger export receipts could also provide some support for the Ugandan shilling, which has weakened against the U.S. dollar in recent days.
