Tanzania has announced the discovery of an estimated 223 billion cubic feet of natural gas reserves in Mnazi Bay, the country's energy minister said on Tuesday.

The discovery highlights the country's continuing potential to expand its natural gas resources and strengthen its role in East Africa's energy sector.

Natural gas is an important part of Tanzania's energy mix, with applications in electricity generation, industrial production and other economic activities. However, the commercial impact of the newly announced reserves will depend on further assessments, development plans and the investment required to bring the gas into production.
