Lagos — Dangote Petroleum Refinery Chief Executive David Bird has set an ambitious target for the company's planned initial public offering (IPO), saying the benchmark is Saudi Aramco's landmark stock market listing.

Bird said the refinery expects to “smash” that benchmark, signalling high expectations for the scale and investor appeal of a future Dangote Refinery listing.

Saudi Aramco's 2019 IPO was one of the largest public offerings in history, raising about $25.6 billion initially and valuing the Saudi oil giant at roughly $1.7 trillion at its market debut.I

A Dangote Refinery IPO would give public investors an opportunity to gain exposure to one of Africa's largest industrial projects. The Lagos-based refinery has capacity to process about 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day and is expected to play an increasingly important role in Nigeria's fuel supply and Africa's refined-products market.

Why it matters

A successful listing could become a major event for Nigeria and Africa’s capital markets, potentially attracting domestic and international investment into the continent’s energy and industrial sectors.

For Dangote Refinery, an IPO could also broaden its investor base and provide access to public capital as the company expands operations and seeks to strengthen its position in regional and international petroleum markets.

Bird's comparison with Saudi Aramco sets an exceptionally high benchmark. The eventual significance of the IPO, however, will depend on key details including valuation, the percentage of the company offered to investors, the listing venue and prevailing market conditions when the transaction takes place.
