Johannesburg — South Africa’s producer inflation accelerated to 6.2% year-on-year in September, up from 5.0% in August, according to data released by Statistics South Africa on Thursday.
The Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures changes in prices received by producers for their goods, also increased by 1.0% month-on-month in September, highlighting a further rise in producer-level prices.
The acceleration in producer inflation points to increasing price pressures within South Africa’s production and supply chains. Changes in producer prices can affect business operating costs and, depending on market conditions, may eventually influence prices paid by consumers.
Higher production costs could also put pressure on company profit margins, particularly in sectors where businesses have limited room to pass additional expenses on to customers.
The latest figures will be important for businesses, investors and policymakers assessing inflation trends, cost pressures and the broader outlook for South Africa’s economy.
