The South African rand strengthened slightly against the dollar in early trading on Monday as investors positioned themselves ahead of key economic releases, including the government's medium-term budget policy statement and September inflation figures.

At 0548 GMT, the rand was trading at 16.4475 per dollar, gaining approximately 0.2% from its previous closing level.

Market attention is focused on Wednesday's medium-term budget policy statement, to be delivered by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. The announcement is expected to provide fresh insight into the country's fiscal outlook, amid growing expectations of an improving budget balance and a more favourable assessment of South Africa's sovereign credit rating prospects.

Investors will also be watching closely as Statistics South Africa prepares to release September consumer inflation figures and retail sales data on Wednesday. The reports are expected to offer further insight into price pressures and consumer spending in Africa's largest economy.

However, persistent conflict in the Middle East continues to raise concerns about elevated fuel costs, which could place additional pressure on inflation and household finances.

Nedbank economists forecast that annual headline inflation will rise to 4.8% in September, up from 4.4% in August. Meanwhile, annual retail sales growth is expected to slow to 2.5% in August, compared with 3.4% recorded in July.

According to Nedbank, rising transport costs, driven by higher fuel prices and a weaker rand, are expected to be the primary contributors to inflationary pressure.

In the bond market, South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond remained largely unchanged in early trading, while its yield increased by half a basis point to 8.7%.

The rand's modest gains come as investors assess the potential impact of upcoming fiscal announcements and economic data on the country's financial outlook. The results could influence market sentiment towards South African assets in the days ahead.
