Cape Town — Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has selected Honeywell Technologies to provide engineering services, licensing and equipment for a planned 700,000-barrels-per-day (bpd) refinery in Kenya, the U.S.-based company said on Wednesday.

Dangote and Kenyan President William Ruto broke ground for the $16 billion project in Lamu County, despite criticism from conservationists and affected landowners who are challenging its construction in court.

Honeywell and Dangote previously worked together at his Nigerian refinery, where the company is helping with upgrades aimed at doubling the plant’s capacity to 1.4 million bpd.

“Through our long-standing relationship with Dangote, we have developed proven large-train engineering designs that can be applied to the Kenya refinery to significantly reduce time-to-market,” Honeywell Technologies UOP President Rajesh Gattupalli said in a statement.

The refinery will produce diesel, petrol and jet fuel for Kenya, East Africa’s largest economy, with some products also expected to be exported to other countries across the region.
