Cairo — Italian energy group Eni plans to expand gas processing capacity in Egypt’s Western Desert through its Meleiha Phase 2 project, as the country seeks to strengthen domestic gas production and improve supplies to its local market.

The state-controlled energy company said on Tuesday that it had launched start-up activities for the development of a new gas hub within the Merged Meleiha concession.

The facility is designed to process up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, significantly increasing processing capacity and supporting the growth of Egypt’s natural gas output.

According to Eni, the project will enable new production to be connected to Egypt’s existing gas infrastructure, helping to bring additional supplies into the country’s energy network.

The development is also expected to improve the availability of natural gas for Egypt’s domestic market, where reliable energy supplies remain important for industrial activity, electricity generation and broader economic needs.

Eni is currently Egypt's leading energy producer. The company reported hydrocarbon production of approximately 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day on an equity basis in 2025.

The Meleiha Phase 2 development forms part of the company’s activities in Egypt’s oil and gas sector, reinforcing its role in the country’s energy production and infrastructure development.
