Cairo — Egypt aims to increase its locally procured wheat by 20% in the upcoming season as it works towards achieving wheat self-sufficiency by 2030, the supply minister said on Tuesday.
The target reflects Egypt's efforts to strengthen domestic wheat supplies and reduce its reliance on imported grain.
Wheat is a strategic commodity for Egypt, a major global wheat importer, with domestic production and government procurement playing an important role in supporting national food security.
The planned increase in local purchases forms part of the country’s longer-term drive to expand domestic supply and improve its capacity to meet national demand.
